Free Hosts for your philosophy websites

There are 100s of free hosts available on the internet and they all want you to sign up for their services. Why? Because they want their ads on your site. When you get hosted for free your host will put adverts on your site, everytime one of your visitors clicks on an ad, your host will make money. Some hosts put ads relatively discreetly on the page others will be quite distracting.

Your URL on a free host

When choosing a free host, it's worth considering what kind of URL they will give you. Most will not allow you to have your own domain name - www. yourdomain.com - which you'd have to pay to register anyway. For the majority of free hosts you will be given a URL either like this:

www.yourname.freehost.com - or - www.freehost.com/yourname.htm

I prefer the former because they are easy to remember when you tell others. For example, my sample site at 150m.com is at www.philosophry.150m.com which isn't too hard to remember.

Bare in mind that free hosts often give you a very limited service compared to paid hosting. Most will limit the amount of webspace you may use but this isn't really a problem for philosophy sites which are mostly text. You will get very little or no support from the host and your site may often go down - become unavailable to visitors more often. Although you get limited webspace and bandwidth, your sites do not have to be the basic one page sites I've offered as an example. After you have created your site, you may find some people unwilling to link to free hosted sites. However with non-profit sites this isn't so much of a problem.
